Admirably staged and smartly dialogued, it has zero great complications in lifestyle down the very unsightly label.” [ 8 ]

The latest film’s writer and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess online game, having mortal stakes, between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling enterprise and you can old a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely managed gestures off like and you may risk, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly cocky photographs (including his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden classic of the genre.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, just like the an authorities inspector, along with within the rating . While the area comes after a familiar development, the brand new characterizations was new and the shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialog was terse and relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney reach. Unusual cam basics come along on occasion in order to intensify notice and you may briefly stop the interest. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing since manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, new journalist and you will member producer, also helps with making it a mellow manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily an issue of watching Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly when you are a huge throw regarding stars and performers render him standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the good nothing lady which brings out the latest best in your and Ellen Drew is the smooth and you may slinky vixen just who will get him to your jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy given that villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do an alternate in a position trip just like the an exhausted police inspector who eventually closes happening. Significant amounts of ingesting and you will puffing is carried out by every worried.” [ 12 ]
