Coaching the Three-Player Spinpolo Entry Pass

The three-player spinpolo entry pass is a narrow skill: one player holds the ball at the top, one drives from the wing, and one sets a screen before rolling into the centre. The drill succeeds only when the first pass arrives before the defender can reset. That single pass is the concrete subject here, because it exposes spacing, timing, and body orientation faster than a full possession does.

Problem: the entry pass collapses under pressure

In a three-player spinpolo grid, the ball carrier often waits for the driver to become fully open before releasing the pass. The defender then recovers, the lane closes, and the drill turns into a static passing exercise. A simple test shows the cost: count how many entries are caught inside the defensive line rather than ahead of it. If the number is low, the problem is not shooting or finishing; it is the timing of the first pass.

Cause: receivers square up too early

The usual cause is that the receiver faces the ball before checking the defender’s position. That flat stance gives the passer a clear target but hides the space behind the defender. In spinpolo, the receiver should arrive with hips half-open, scan once over the shoulder, and show a hand only when the passing lane is real. A useful reference for the drill’s spacing and rotation rules is spinpolo, especially for coaches who need a repeatable starting shape.

Solution: build the pass in three steps

Run the entry pass as a staged drill rather than a live scrimmage from the first whistle.

  1. Set the shape: Place the passer at the top, the driver on the wing, and the screen in the middle. Mark a two-metre gate behind the defender. The passer may only throw once the driver’s inside hand crosses the gate.
  2. Add the scan: Have the driver approach at half speed, check the defender’s shoulder, then choose a straight drive or a roll. The passer holds the ball for one extra beat; this teaches patience without allowing a stall.
  3. Score the entry: Award one point for a pass caught inside the gate and two points for a pass that leads directly to a shot. Defenders score by forcing a reset or a backward pass.

The takeaway is that the drill should reward the pass that creates an advantage, not the pass that merely avoids a turnover.

Coaching cues that keep the drill honest

Use short cues and stop the rep when the shape breaks. Tell the receiver “scan, then show” and tell the passer “hold, then hit.” Keep the gate narrow enough that a lazy pass cannot score. In a ten-minute block, run six reps at half speed, six at game speed, and then two reps with a live defender. If the entry pass still arrives late, reduce the defender’s starting distance rather than adding more players. The result is a cleaner spinpolo possession, a faster first pass, and a drill that transfers directly to small-sided play.
